Depeche Mode je elektronická formácia pôvodom z anglického Basildonu, založená v roku 1980. Skupina sa stala jednou z najúspešnejších a najvplyvnejších predstaviteľov synth-popu a novej vlny, s významným dopadom na modernú elektronickú hudbu.
Kompilačný The Singles 81>98 vyšiel v roku 2001 u Sony Music ako trojdiskový boxset obsahujúci singlovú tvorbu skupiny medzi rokmi 1981 a 1998. Vydanie spája dva samostatné tituly – The Singles 81>85 a The Singles 86>98 – a ponúka celkom 38 skladieb. Kolekcia pokrýva celú éru, keď skupina postupne prešla od raných syntezátorových piesní ako Just Can't Get Enough k monumentálnym hitom Personal Jesus a Enjoy the Silence. Boxset zachytáva vývoj zvuku Depeche Mode od new wave experimentov k čoraz sofistikovanejšiemu syntezátorovému rocku.
V čase vydania tejto kompilácie tvorili skupinu Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andrew Fletcher a Vince Clarke.
