Grateful Dead bola americká rocková kapela z Kalifornie, preslávená svojím eklektickým štýlom spájajúcim rock, folk, blues, jazz, country a psychedeliu. Skupina patrila medzi priekopníkov jam bandov a bola známa dlhými improvizáciami počas živých vystúpení a oddanou fanúšikovskou základňou zvanou „Deadheads“.
Album Grateful Dead vyšiel 24. septembra 1971 na vydavateľstve Warner Bros. Records ako druhé koncertné dvojalbum skupiny. Hoci bolo publikované bez oficiálneho titulu, všeobecne je známe ako Skull and Roses alebo Skull Fuck. Nahrávky pochádzajú z vystúpení v newyorskom Fillmore East (marec a apríl 1971) a sanfranciskom Fillmore West (júl 1971). Album obsahuje 21 skladieb vrátane rozšírených verzií hitov ako Bertha, Playing in the Band či Wharf Rat. Stalo sa prvým zlatým certifikovaným albumom skupiny a až do vydania kompilácie Skeletons from the Closet bol ich najpredávanejším titulom.
V čase vydania albumu tvorili zostavu Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Ron „Pigpen“ McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Keith Godchaux, Bruce Hornsby, Robert Hunter a Rob Wasserman.
