Michael Jackson, označovaný za „Kráľa popu“, bol americký spevák, skladateľ a tanečník, ktorého kariéra trvala štyri desaťročia. Za svoju tvorbu získal 13 cien Grammy a 26 cien American Music Award. Jeho album Thriller z roku 1982 je najpredávanejším albumom všetkých čias.
Kompilácia The Essential Michael Jackson vyšla 19. júla 2005 u vydavateľstva Legacy Recordings v edícii The Essential. Tento dvojalbum obsahuje 38 hitov mapujúcich Jacksonovu cestu od čias Motown Records a skupiny The Jackson 5 na konci 60. a v 70. rokoch až po singel You Rock My World z roku 2001. Na albume nájdete skladby ako Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat It, Man in the Mirror alebo Smooth Criminal. Niektoré piesne sú zaradené v upravených verziách oproti originálnym albumovým nahrávkam.
