Marillion je britská rocková kapela založená v roku 1979 v Aylesbury, ktorej tvorba spája prvky post-punku a klasického progresívneho rocku. V osemdesiatych rokoch sa stala komerčne najúspešnejšou neo-prog formáciou svojej doby.
Album Clutching at Straws vyšiel 22. júna 1987 u vydavateľstva Sanctuary Records ako druhý konceptuálny album skupiny. Rozpráva príbeh spisovateľa Torcha, ktorý pomaly podlieha alkoholizmu a rekapituluje svoj život. Zároveň ide o poslednú štúdiovú nahrávku, na ktorej spieva pôvodný frontman Fish — kapelu opustil nasledujúceho roku. Medzi 23 skladbami nájdete skladby Incommunicado, Warm Wet Circles, Sugar Mice aj alternatívne verzie a demá, ktoré zachytávajú posledné nahrávky skupiny s Fishom. Hoci doska komerčne nedosiahla úspech svojho predchodcu Misplaced Childhood, strávila pätnásť týždňov v britských rebríčkoch.
Pri nahrávaní sa na albume podieľala päťčlenná zostava: Fish (spev), Steve Rothery (gitara), Mark Kelly (klávesy), Pete Trewavas (basgitara) a Ian Mosley (bicí).
