Metallica patrí k najúspešnejším metalovým kapelám sveta a významnej štvorici thrash metalu 80. rokov. Táto americká skupina, založená v roku 1981, predala viac ako 100 miliónov albumov a získala deväť cien Grammy.
Album ReLoad na 3 CD vyšiel v novembri 1997 u vydavateľstva Blackened. Ide o siedmy štúdiový album a pokračovanie albumu Load z roku 1996 — pôvodne Metallica uvažovala o dvojalbume, no na radu producenta Boba Rocka rozdelila materiál na dva samostatné tituly. ReLoad obsahuje 42 skladieb vrátane pôvodných nahrávok a demoverzií z obdobia kompozície Loadu. Album debutoval na 1. mieste v USA (436 000 predaných kópií v prvom týždni) a celosvetovo sa ho predalo viac ako 9,5 milióna kusov. Medzi výrazné skladby patria Fuel, The Memory Remains (s hosťujúcou speváčkou Marianne Faithfull) a The Unforgiven II, pokračovanie piesne z Black Albumu. Hudobne sa Metallica pohybovala na rozhraní heavy metalu, alternatívneho rocku a bluesových vplyvov, čo pritiahlo širšie publikum. Na albume sa po prvýkrát objavil ženský hosť — jediný v diskografii kapely.
Zostavu tvorili James Hetfield (gitara, hlavný spev), Lars Ulrich (bicie, perkusie), Kirk Hammett (sprievodný spev, gitara) a Jason Newsted (sprievodný spev, basová gitara). Pre Newsteda to bol posledný štúdiový album s Metallikou.
