Joni Mitchell je kanadská pesničkárka, multi-inštrumentalistka a maliarka, považovaná za jednu z najvplyvnejších autoriek svojej generácie. Svoju kariéru začala v šesťdesiatych rokoch na folkovom okruhu, neskôr vo svojej tvorbe spájala folk, rock, pop a jazz. Získala jedenásť cien Grammy a v roku 1997 bola uvedená do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Album Shadows And Light vyšiel pôvodne v roku 1980 ako živá nahrávka z turné v Santa Barbara County Bowl v septembri 1979. Toto rozšírené vydanie z roku 2024 prináša remasterovaný záznam koncertu na šiestich vinyloch, zachytávajúci Mitchellovú v období, keď jej tvorba bola výrazne ovplyvnená jazzom. Na albume zaznievajú skladby ako Coyote, Amelia, Free Man in Paris alebo Woodstock, doplnené sólovými vstupmi sprievodných hudobníkov.
Na turné Mitchellovú sprevádzala jazzová zostava, v ktorej pôsobil basgitarista Jaco Pastorius a ďalší významní hudobníci vtedajšej jazzovej scény, ktorí premenili jej pesničkárske skladby na rozšírené jazzové aranžmány.
