Death bola americká deathmetalová skupina založená v roku 1983, považovaná za priekopníka žánru a za jednu z najinšpiratívnejších death metalových kapiel v histórii. Pod vedením Chucka Schuldinera, ktorý si vyslúžil prezývku „otec death metalu“, skupina prešla od surového death metalu počiatkov až k technicky náročnému progressive death metalu.
Album The Sound of Perseverance vyšiel 31. augusta 1998 u vydavateľstva Nuclear Blast ako siedmy a posledný štúdiový album kapely. Ide o dvojCD s 19 skladbami, obsahujúce ako finálne verzie skladieb, tak demoverzie z rokov 1997 a 1998. Patrí k najvýznamnejším počinom Death a kritici ho radia medzi najväčšie heavy metalové albumy všetkých čias. Medzi zvýraznené skladby patria Scavenger of Human Sorrow, Spirit Crusher alebo inštrumentálna Voice of the Soul.
Na albume sa podieľali Chuck Schuldiner (spev, gitara), Shannon Hamm (gitara), Scott Clendenin (basgitara) a Richard Christy (bicie). Po Schuldinerovej smrti v roku 2001 skupina ukončila činnosť.
